July 3, 2024 - Fly to Breakfast at Cape May

This morning I was flying over to Cape May Airport to have breakfast with an old Trunk Monkey friend, Mark.  I'm also going to shoot some Insta360 video again.  Although maybe the sky was not as blue as it was Monday, it was still an exceptionally good weather day for flying.  Here I am looking south  down the Chester River.

And looking at the Chester River as it turns east.  On my left wing, you can see my "selfie-stick" jutting out with the Insta360 camera on.  Before takeoff, I turn the Insta360 camera on, then connect my smartphone to it via Wifi.  From a smartphone app in the cockpit, I can turn the Insta360 recording on and off remotely.  That's good.  The bad is that both the Insta360 camera and Smartphone have to be on the entire flight draining the battery.  As I would learn, the Insta360 battery doesn't last that long -- maybe 30 to 45 minutes.  Good to know; that's why I'm practicing with the videocamera on these flights.

Approaching the Delaware Bay/River.  The top of the south New Jersey marsh starts just to the right of that nuclear power plant cooling tower.

Looking south down the Delaware coast which is also marsh.

Now I'm down low over the south New Jersey marsh, which as loyal readers know, is one of my favorite places to fly.  June and July are prime months to fly it -- the marsh is bright green.

Some areas have what I call the "green velvet" look.

All too soon, I reach the marsh's end, pop-up, and there is Cape May Airport dead ahead, with the Atlantic Ocean visible beyond.

This is Mark, standing in front of his immaculate Citabria, which believe it or not is 20+ years old.  He really keeps it looking good.  Back when I had the Citabria, a bunch of us Citabria drivers got together and flew what we called "All Grass, All Day".  We would meet at a grass field, then fly around all day, only landing at grass fields, one of them having a place we could have lunch.  We called ourselves the "Trunk Monkeys".  We had some good times!

Mark has started a RV-14 project.  He's building it at South Jersey Airport.  I'm going to have to fly up there and check out the project one of these days.

Mark's friend, Bob, flies this Maule.

After a delicious breakfast at the Flight Deck Diner, we said our goodbyes, and I tookoff from Cape May.

The lighthouse at Cape May Point.

A broader look at Cape May.  It is now summer, and there are lots of people enjoying the beach, even though it's a weekday.

I joined up on Mark and Bob briefly as they crossed the opening to Delaware Bay, heading southwest to Cape Henlopen.

A nice look at the entire Cape May peninsula.

Descending for a run up the Jersey Shore.  It's required when you're in this area.

That's Cape May Inlet dead-ahead.

Passing by the Ocean Oasis Water Park, right on the beach!

Approaching Hereford Inlet.

Corson Inlet.  At this point I turned inland and headed west.

Looking to the north as I cross the tip of New Jersey.  Nothing but trees.  In New Jersey?!

Following the Sassafras River to the Chesapeake Bay.

Boaters enjoying a secluded beach on the river.

Pretty green inlet.

"The Road".

Unfortunately I had unknowingly set the Insta360 in the single-camera mode early in the flight, as opposed to the two-camera 360-degree mode.   So none of my videos came out!  It's an easy mistake to make on the app.  But I won't make that mistake again.
